Set in the 1890's, the Atchison County Chronicles reveals everyday life for ordinary women facing extraordinary challenges. Each novel introduces a female protagonist grounded in actual historical Atchison County, Kansas locations, and has been inspired by events that shaped the county during this period.
Though the novels stand alone, they are connected by overlapping characters, recurring themes of strength, resilience, and justice, and the shared backdrop of Kansas life on the cusp of the 20th century.

After being cast out by her resentful stepmother, 15-year-old Bessie Dennis is sent to live and work for strangers on the James Mayfield farm. After her initial meeting with their disagreeable son, Isaac, and clashing with the matriarch, Elizabeth, Bessie is determined to return to Missouri where she has family that loves her.
Out of affection for James Mayfield and concern for their neighbor Anna Grayson, she agrees to stay a little longer.
Even as Bessie struggles to adapt to the rigors of farm life and navigate small-town gossip, running is never far from her mind.
A series of crises test her mettle; as she proves her capability and resilience, slowly earning the family's respect, another family member offers an opportunity she finds difficult to refuse.
Should she return to family? Stay where she's needed? Or chase a dream?

I had the privilege of being an ARC reader for Debra’s first two books, and for anyone who likes a good book you can’t put down, you will absolutely love these! You fall in love with the characters and their stories! These books, made me feel like I knew these characters! After reading these books, I have told Debra I want to come visit this area because the books left me wanting to learn more about Bessie, Anna, and all the others you meet along the way.

I was also privileged to be an ARC reader. I didn't put this book down until I finished it. It was a unique experience to become immersed in a story that is based literally in your backyard with towns you are familiar with but also so far in the past that certain aspects are no longer present - such as the railroad stations. I not only loved the story, but loved learning about the history of our area that I didn't have any knowledge of. I cannot wait for the next books in the series!

In comparison with other authors, these books are right up there with Kristin Hannah and many other historical fiction writers!
